Chapter Fifteen

Misery got out of the car at the Civic Center Park, her new briefcase in one hand and a pastry box in the other. She nodded to the driver, watching as the car drove away. The day, which had started out bright and sunny, had been overtaken by dark grey clouds and a bite to the wind, chasing other park goers into the warmth of fitness centers and coffee houses. Misery was grateful to be alone, her mind full of the events of the morning. She needed a space to think, and this was becoming her go-to place for such musings.

She walked deeper into the park, settling on the thin spring grass next to the tree she thought of as hers. The budding branches wouldn’t keep the rain off, but it provided shelter from the wind. Her sweater kept off the rest of the cool, making things pleasant enough, and she tucked the pastries and the briefcase next to her. The pastries were a gift Evan had handed her just before she got in the car. It was a large box from To Everything There is a Teason and contained a pair of raspberry cream cheese pastries. She’d pointed them out to him the first time they’d gone to the tea shop. She thought he’d forgotten.

Maybe if she offered one to Jules it would get her to come out of her room.

Misery closed her eyes and focused on her breathing, chasing other thoughts out of her mind. If she wanted to sort this all out, she needed to start from a grounded place.

Each breath helped her to still, letting her senses run into the deep earth. This was a place of strength and security, and with each visit it became more welcoming and familiar. She felt the ebbs and flows of stone and dirt, the tiny bugs that ran through the grass, and the roots that sank deep and drank of the nutrients below. The family of mice were still under the tree, digging and rearranging their little burrow lined with scraps of grass and fabric.

“Hello, AnnaLisa.”

Misery’s eyes snapped open in surprise. “Samuel…” she croaked, her mouth gone dry.

“I’ve missed you.”

Misery lunged to her feet, doubly grateful for Evan’s healing. She wasn’t certain how Samuel had drawn so close without her feeling him approach until she glanced at his feet. He wasn’t touching the ground, but floating just above the grass. He’d gotten an upgrade. That wasn’t good.

“I thought I told you to leave.”

Samuel clucked his tongue, scolding. “And I told you, you would never be rid of me. I have given you time to consider your situation, and I have spoken to our benevolent Master. He bids you return to the flock and promises all will be forgiven and forgotten. He has great Mercy and his Grace is sufficient for all. You are welcomed home.” His fingers came to rest on a silver-colored cross hanging at his throat, replacing the leather he’d once worn, and Misery scowled.

The gold Sentinel crosses were a symbol of their power and commitment to the good of humanity.
